Abbas is expected to to speak at the ceremony commemorating the second anniversary of the death of the deceased former president and PLO chairman. Thousands of Palestinians from across the West Bank streamed into the city of Ramallah - the Palestinian's de facto capital - to attend the ceremony, brought in by buses from across the area. They then marched, carrying Palestinian flags and pictures of Arafat, to the muqaata, the compound that served as Arafat's headquarters when he was president of the Palestinian Authority. The thousands of people who had thronged to the compound stood for a minute's silence in Arafat's memory. A march was also organised In Gaza City, Gaza Strip, where Fatah members marched through the city to remember Arafat. The participants held posters of Arafat and his photos adorned the city's streets. Memorabilia of Arafat, who was the first president of the Palestinian National Authority, was also on sale in shops. Arafat died on November 11, 2004 after leading the Palestinians for nearly four decades. After his death, his Fatah Party, which dominated Palestinian political life since the 1960s, lost a parliamentary election to the militant Islamic Hamas group, sparking an international economic boycott of the Palestinian Authority.
