Demystifying Breast Cysts: What You Need to Know - with Dr Tasha

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop within the breast tissue. They are common and often benign, meaning they are not cancerous. These cysts can vary in size, ranging from tiny to several centimeters in diameter. While the exact cause of breast cysts is not always clear, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can contribute to their development. Women in their 30s and 40s are more likely to experience breast cysts, although they can occur at any age. Symptoms of breast cysts may include a palpable lump that is smooth and easily movable, breast tenderness or pain, and swelling in the affected area. In some cases, breast cysts may cause discomfort or concern, leading individuals to seek medical evaluation. Diagnosing breast cysts typically involves a combination of physical examination, imaging tests such as mammograms or ultrasounds, and in some cases, fine-needle aspiration to drain the fluid from the cyst for further analysis. Treatment for breast cysts may not be necessary if they are small, asymptomatic, and noncancerous. However, larger or symptomatic cysts may require drainage or removal to alleviate discomfort or to rule out any underlying issues. Regular breast self-exams and mammograms can help detect any changes in the breast tissue, including the presence of cysts. It's essential for individuals to communicate any concerns or changes they notice in their breasts to their healthcare providers for appropriate evaluation and management.
