It is located in the southeastern part of Guangdong Province, bordering the South China Sea to the south. The city's territory borders Jieyang City to the east, Meizhou City and Heyuan City to the north, and Huizhou City to the west. It lies at the junction of the Pearl River Delta and eastern Guangdong's coastal hilly area, 160 kilometers east of Shantou City and 120 kilometers west of Shenzhen City. The terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast; there are Lianhua Mountains in the northwest, while low hills and coastal plains dominate in the southeast. Rivers such as Luohe River and Huangjiang River flow from north to south into the South China Sea. The coastline stretches about 455 kilometers with 881 coastal islands large and small. The municipal government is located at No. 429 Shanwei Avenue, Chengqu District.
