Angles to Counter the Guillotine Choke in BJJ

The double leg takedown can be an effective takedown in BJJ. But it does run the risk of putting you in a Guillotine Choke if you aren't careful. So having a good Guillotine Choke counter is really important if you plan to use takedowns in BJJ. In this video I give some basic details on how a simple Guillotine works and how to counter it if you're shooting a Double Leg takedown. Discussing the Guillotine Choke counters. I show the importance of understanding how the angles work. How cutting across the person's body is incredibly important and will allow you to free yourself or at least not get submitted. The 2 Guillotine Choke counters I show have been mainstays for me in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The 1st one is simple switching from a Double to a Single Leg takedown and making sure we keep ourselves at the correct angle to avoid the choke. The 2nd involves quickly switching our grip once we feel the person locking up the choke. We will keep a little opening for ourselves and hop over to the other side. Again, getting ourselves at the correct angle to avoid the choke. Both of these techniques are Guillotine Choke Counters because they are initiated after the choke is being used following the takedown attempt. I did this video for Elijah who wrestled in High School and has found that adjusting his takedowns to Brazilian Jiujitsu is a bit difficult. He says that when he shoots he is just walking right into the Guillotine Choke. I know the feeling because I did the same thing when I started my BJJ training. If you're in the same situation and having trouble with Double Leg takedowns in BJJ because of the Guillotine Choke. Then I hope the details in this video help! Thanks! -Chewy
