Choosing Virtues in a Loud World | Larger Story Church | September 6, 2024

There is this much-published Christian theologian, N. T. Wright. He describes living our life out of our worthiness as virtue. “Virtue is what happens when someone has made a thousand small choices requiring effort and concentration to do something which is good and right, but which doesn’t come naturally. And then, on the thousand and first time, when it really matters, they find that they do what’s required automatically. Virtue is what happens when wise and courageous choices become second nature.” Virtue is what happens when wise and courageous choices become second nature. You develop a virtue by taking action toward a thing that's objectively good. The virtue crops up as a byproduct. Virtue is a byproduct of your decisions. Virtues change the way we make decisions. Let’s talk about this in a world where we are growing worse. Questions: Let’s make a list of virtues. How do you pursue the good? Is virtue automatically a product of faith? What wisdom from 2 Peter 1:3-8 can you apply to your life? Primer on Humility Humility is a churchy word that is also often misunderstood. Which makes sense because the way of Jesus is maybe best characterized by humility. There is a strength to the way of Jesus which has become terribly distorted. Science can help us understand humility better. Recently scientists have figured out how to study humility. How? How do you ask people how humble they are and get an honest answer? Would a truly humble person be honest and report high humility? Would a narcissist answering the question create an imbalance in the data? Two layperson’s books on this new science are: Humble: Free Yourself from the Traps of the Narcissistic World by Daryl Van Tongeren and The Science of Virtue: Why Positive Psychology Matters to the Church by Mark R. McMinn. Both of these books are being used in this series as well as lots and lots of Bible. Because the Bible is full of this virtue. Scientists point to these primary qualities of humble people. The first is that humble people have a reasonably accurate view of themselves, neither too high nor too low. Having self-awareness allows us to actively craft our life rather than passively react to the world around us. Humility allows you to know your limits and set boundaries. Humble people pay attention to others, with generous assumptions. Humble people are teachable. Curiously teachable. Humble people laugh a lot. We are using this to define humility. Start pondering these brain-blowing thoughts to prepare for our conversations ahead. ------------------- Vision Statement: Conversations that are something deep, something familiar, something mysterious, something demanding…that will draw you out of your small story into the larger story of God’s redemption.
