Rumsfeld and Franks comment on Iraq strategy

(5 Mar 2003) 1. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and general Tommy Franks walk into Pentagon briefing room 2. Cutaway of media 3. SOUNDBITE (English) US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "Saddam Hussein can prevent the use of force. To do so, he will have to disarm or leave. The choice will be made in Baghdad. There should be no doubt that if force is to be used, and that decision has not yet been made, that the coalition forces will prevail and that it will be a very large coalition." 4. Cutaway of media 5. SOUNDBITE (English) US Defencee Secretary Donald Rumsfeld "What we do know is that there is a large and growing number of countries that have said to us on a variety of differing bases that they would like to participate. There are already a number of countries doing military planning with General Franks, there are a number of countries who have already said that you're going to have overflight rights and basing and various other things. There are a number of countries who have said they want to participate in a post-Saddam Hussein stabilization activity. But until a decision is made, it shouldn't be surprising that it's not made public." 6. Cutaway of media 7. SOUNDBITE (English) General Tommy Franks "Our troops in the field are trained. They're ready, they are capable, and if the President of the United States decides to undertake military operations with the coalition mentioned by the Secretary, there is no doubt we will prevail." 8. Wide shot of Rumsfeld and Franks STORYLINE: Following a high level meeting at the White House with President Bush's national security team, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters Saddam Hussein still has time to avoid a war. Speaking at the Pentagon with General Tommy Franks, the commander who would lead the war, Rumsfeld insisted the president has made no decision yet to use force. And both men asserted if force is used, there will be a "large coalition" of nations involved. The Defence secretary said the US has secured the support of several nations who prefer not to go public with that support until President Bush has made a final decision on launching an attack. General Tommy Franks said the U-S military is now "in a position to provide a military option" if the president gives the order to move against Iraq, and he said the US will prevail.
