ASL Transcript: Welcome to the August 9 issue of Hi5. My name is Cryss Padilla. I am the Research Services Coordinator for Visual Learning Visual Language (VL2) and PhD in Educational Neuroscience (PEN). I am honored to be your ASL signer today! Here are our Top Five news stories. 1 Presidential portraits and other Museum artifacts to be relocated to the staircase in College Hall. We have a full report on our website. 2 Jay Korff, a reporter with WJLA Channel 7, won a local Emmy on the Miller family titled “History Hidden No More,” which aired February 2023. He was awarded an Emmy in the Diversity/Equity/Inclusion News category June 22nd in Rockville, Maryland. 3 Three deaf people were awarded 2024 Disability Futures fellowships – Warren “Wawa” Snipe, Nancy Rourke, and Natasha Ofilu. Snipe is a Gallaudet alumni and an accomplished hip hop artist. Rourke has been working on a mural on campus all summer. Ofili is a well known actress, artist, and storyteller. Congratulations to them! 4 Gallaudet University mourns the passing of Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, H-’06, on July 16. She was 81 years old. She co-founded The Freedom Singers and later started the African American a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, which had American Sign Language interpreters at all of its performances. Sweet Honey in the Rock performed on the Gallaudet University campus several times. 5 On July 22, we celebrated the one year anniversary of the historic graduation ceremony of 24 Black Deaf students from Kendall School Division II with a gathering at the Kellogg Conference Center Hotel for a time to remember and reflect on Kendall 24 Day. On our website, we have stories about our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, showcasing the amazing things they are doing here, around the country, and across the globe. The next issue of Hi5 will be on Friday, September 6. In the meantime, stay up to date by following @GallaudetU on our social media platforms. If you have a story that you feel would be a good fit for Hi5 or social media, share it with us at gu.live/request. Have a wonderful weekend!
