A Half Century of the R46 Subway Car and the Beginning of the End

The R46 fleet was delivered to the MTA from 1975 to 1978 as the second order of 75 ft cars for the New York Subway. These were the last subway cars built by legendary manufacturer Pullman Standard, which would close up shop a few years after the last cars were delivered. All cars would undergo significant refurbishment between 1990 and 1992 as part of the MTA's General Overhaul fleet-wide life extension program. While for many years post overhaul they were found primarily on the F R and G trains, today they can be found on the A C N Q W and Rockaway Park Shuttle. The R46 fleet is set to be replaced by the brand new R211 subway cars being deployed from 2023 onwards. While the fleet will make it to a half century in operation, it is unlikely they will approach the R32's record of 58 years. As of the time of upload, the R46 is becoming a rare sight on the A, and with the recent rollout of the R211A fleet onto the C to join the two R211T trains, the era of the R46 on the IND is rapidly coming to a close. This compilation of the R46 was shot over multiple years and covers the R46 in a wide range of its operating area. All lines operating the R46 regularly in 2022 to 2024 are included in all three boroughs where they operate.
