MARATA STREET in St Petersburg, Russia, Where Dmitry Shostakovich Lived!

Walking tour all along Marata street, one of the streets in the Central district of St Petersburg, Russia. It goes from the corner of Nevsky Prospekt to Pod'ezdboy Lane. It is named after Jean Paul Marat (1743-1793), a French doctor, journalist and revolutionary. He published the paper called "Ami du peuple" (A People's Friend). So he's got a nickname "People's Friend". In 1739, the street was named after Preobrazhensky Polk (Preobrazhensky Regiment) - Preobrazhensky Regiment Street. In October 1856, after the death of Emperor Nicholas I, the street was named after him and got to be called Nikolayevskaya street. In 1917, after the February Revolution of 1917, it was renamed to the 27th of February Avenue. And then finally in 1918, it got to be called Marata street. Named after a French revolutionary Jean Paul Marat.
