301 Errors | What is a 301 Error? | How to Fix a 301 Errors | Web Development | Website Maintenance https://profiletree.com/small-busines... Welcome to this ProfileTree video! In this video, we take a look at what 301 error is, how it happens, and how you can rectify the issues that have caused this website error to occur. A "301 error" isn't quite accurate, it's typically referred to as a "301 redirect" and it's not an error at all, but rather a method of redirecting users from one URL to another. This is a type of HTTP response status code that tells the client that the requested resource has been permanently moved to a new location. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect and is beneficial for both users and search engines. For users, it helps guide them to the correct page if the original one they were trying to access has moved. For search engines, it helps retain the search ranking of a webpage, as the search engine transfers the inbound links from the original page to the new page. Here's how you can use it: If you're a website user: If you've been redirected via a 301 and you feel it was in error (you're ending up at the wrong page, for example), there's not much you can do aside from reaching out to the website owner to inform them of the issue. If you're a website owner or developer: URL Changes: If the URL of a page on your website changes, you can use a 301 redirect to ensure users who have bookmarked the old URL will still reach the desired page. Migrating to a New Domain: If you've moved your website to a new domain, using 301 redirects will help your users find your new website when they visit your old URLs. Consolidating Content: If you've consolidated information from multiple pages into a single page, 301 redirects can be used to ensure users who try to access the old pages are taken to the new, consolidated page. Maintaining SEO: When you move a webpage, a 301 redirect can transfer the SEO history and ranking power of the old page to the new page. Creating a 301 redirect varies based on the web server you are using. If you're using Apache, for example, you can add a redirect directive in your .htaccess file. If you're using a CMS like WordPress, there are plugins available to manage redirects. Always test your 301 redirects after implementing them to ensure they're working as expected.
