Check out Bas Rutten's Liver Shot on MMA Surge: http://bit.ly/MMASurgeEp1 Mahalo expert Gene Shaw gives a comprehensive Photoshop tutorial on custom keyboard shortcuts. http://www.gargoyle1.com/ Creating Custom Keyboard Shortcuts --------------------------------------------------------------------- Would you rather browse through menus and sub-menus to activate a specific tool/option, or would you prefer to press a single key or combination to achieve the same results in half the time? Creating custom keyboard shortcuts will maximize your efficiency on Photoshop. First and foremost, using a multi-buttoned mouse (such as the Razer Naga with 17 buttons), will help you expedite many tasks within Photoshop. Step 1: Access the Keyboard Shortcuts and Menus Window --------------------------------------------------------------------- First things first, go into the Window menu at the top of your screen and then to Custom Keyboard Shortcuts at the bottom of the sub-menu. Alternately, you can access this feature via the Edit menu at the top of the screen and then selecting Keyboard Shortcuts at the bottom of that menu. Step 2: Creating Your Shortcuts --------------------------------------------------------------------- Once in the Keyboard Shortcuts and Menus window, you will find a second drop-down menu next to Shortcuts For... which will allow you to choose whether you will be creating shortcuts for Applications, Menus or Tools. 1. Control/Command + Shift + I will invert any selection. For anything you select with the Marquee Tool, click M (for Marquee) followed by Control/Command + Shift + I and it will now select the inverse space. So if you create a new Layer (Control/Command + Shift + N), followed by the Fill tool (located on the leftmost vertical Tool menu), you will now have the area within your selection highlighted. 2. To undo this, hit Control/Command + Shift + I and you will now highlight everything outside of your selection. The problem with Control/Command + Shift + I is that it reacquires two hands to complete. 3. To make this easier, go up to the Edit menu and then the Keyboard Shortcuts option, which will prompt the Keyboard Shortcuts and Menu option. Choose Select within the list and then click Inverse. Click within the Shortcut field and replace the default shortcut (Control/Command + Shift + I) with Control/Command + W (which is the default shortcut for the Close function. Since this function is usually a final step before quitting the program, it is not necessary to have a convenient shortcut for it while you are working). 4. When you do this, a message will appear stating the shortcut is, "Already in use and will be removed from File Close if accepted." Hit Accept and you will have successfully saved the new shortcut. The key here is to organize all the functions that you regularly use into a convenient arrangement. Step 3: Editing Shortcuts --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Within the Tools section, you will notice that several tools have the same shortcuts. For example, all of the Lasso tools are represented by "L" and to cycle through the various kinds of Lasso tools, you press Shift + L. 2. Some of these tools you are not going to use. For example, you might not need the Magnetic Lasso Tool. To remove it from the list, just erase the "L" within its designated shortcut field and now when you cycle through the Lassos, it won't show up as an option. 3. Feel free to do this with any tools you will only be using once in a while. You may now Accept this and click Okay. 4. You can go over to the Tool menu (leftmost vertical menu with icons), click the Lasso icon and you will notice that all of the Lasso tools are still there. You can continue to use whatever tools you have eliminated a shortcut for by accessing these icons. In other words, deleting a functions shortcut does not delete it from your workplace. 5. In order to organize which tools and panels you use the most, pay attention to how you're working and write down a list of the most frequently-used items. Use this list to customize extensive shortcuts to suit your needs. You can always reset these shortcuts to their original default settings.
