THUMBNAIL CREDIT: PNW Trains The Nathan K5HL is a personal favorite of mine, as it’s exclusively found on my favorite locomotive, which is the GEVO. They have five horns, or bells—1L, 1, 2, 3, 4. The 3 bell faces forward and the rest backwards. First generation K5HLs started appearing in 2004 on the first pre-production GEVOS. They play these notes: C, E, G, B, C. They can be found on GEVOs from all Class I railroads made from 2004-2007. Second generation K5HLs can be found on GEVOS mainly built in 2007. They play these notes: C, D#, G, A#, C. And probably the most common is the 3rd gen, or the Raised Letter version. Found on mostly all GEVOs built from 2008 to Tier 4 GEVOS built recently. They play these notes: C, D#, F#, A#, C.
