Host: Joanna Coles, Warren County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources Guest: Kristin Hildabrand, Warren County Extension Agent for Horticulture Topic: Peony Varieties There are more than 7,000 recognized cultivars listed within peony society. Each cultivar has its characteristics, including bloom size, bloom time, plant size, stem strength, color, and whether it is double, semi-double, or single. The double is full of tons of petals. The single has one row of petals and is open in the center. The semi-double is in the middle, with a few rows of petals open in the center. Cut flower varieties typically have good stem strength, vase life, large blooms, and desirable form and color. There are 3 types of peonies: Herbaceous Peonies- most gardeners have herbaceous, Tree Peonies, and Intersectional, also known as Itoh Peonies. These varieties are hybrids, a cross between a tree and an herbaceous peony. When purchasing peonies, purchase tubers from a reputable nursery catalog or a reliable local garden center. Buying and shopping early is a good idea to guarantee the best selection and desired variety. Inspect tubers for rot before planting. When shopping for cultivars, remember that different varieties bloom early, mid, or late in the season, though all bloom in the spring. Proper planning allows you to have six weeks or more of blooming flowers.
