Imagine a place, luxurious and thoughtfully appointed, nestled between the Niagara River and Lake Ontario. Your very own personal chef cooks lunch —al fresco — in the outdoor kitchen. Just steps away you're sunning poolside enjoying hors d'oeuvres and sipping wine from a local Niagara vineyard. While the legendary falls are nearby, the zen-like sounds of crashing water is actually from the one flowing into your private pool. The good news is that this is not a getaway resort you need reservations to score; this is an extensive and masterful remodelled home, and it is for sale. Represented by Niagara-on-the-Lake Realty’s Patricia Atherton and Caroline Polgrabia, this villa in the heart of wine country turns vacation vibes into an everyday luxe lifestyle. Built in 1919 as a stable, the home was once upon a time ago, built as an add-on to the famed Rand Estates. Today, the footprint remains with the stables, harness room and coach house transformed into an opulent yet cozy living space. The current owners purchased the property in 2014 and began an extensive renovation and restoration the following year. Their goal, to pay homage to the property's equestrian past while elevating the space into a modern lair—ideal for hosting and entertaining large groups. The great room, for example, boasts a magnificent stone fireplace. It sits opposite a library—both featuring vaulted ceilings. Forged metal, leather and chicken wire are impressively weaved into the finer details, a nod to the property’s equestrian past. Each of the rooms are fantastically furnished with replica pieces previously made for a castle — they are also included in the purchase. A favourite show-off exclusive amenity is the fitness room that boasts a secret passage connecting to an office hideaway. And just beyond a floor-to-ceiling glass wall on the main level lies a spectacular courtyard. More than an entertainer’s dream home, this is a space designed for large events. Upward of 300 guests have comfortably floated through the front doors to delight in magical evenings of revelry in the courtyard. Bands typically play stage left on the open lawn. Whether entertaining or simply relaxing, the outdoor space is an enclave of privacy and pleasure with two outdoor dining rooms surrounded by majestic gardens, and adjacent to a sumptuous saltwater pool, illuminated with LED lighting come nightfall. Those aforementioned waterfalls — two, at 6-feet wide cascade from the pergola. At dusk, the outdoor living room loggia delivers indoor/outdoor living at its most spectacular and is warmed by a propane fire table. The covered palapa-style kitchen leads to a guest house replete with kitchenette. In the early 1900s, this petite pad was a milkhouse for sheep. This space was also used for the production of goat cheese and butter that would be shipped across the border. The home’s rich history is extensive: Documents obtained by The Ontario Heritage Trust revealed that “The stables and milkhouse are significant because of their connection with the Rand family. Mrs. Evelyn Sheets, daughter of George F. Rand I, was a keen equestrian vitally interested in the stables. Son, George F, Rand II, [who] raised prize cattle [used] the milkhouse. The Rand family, noted in the United States for its business acumen and political connections, [was friendly] with President F. D. Roosevelt... who spent summers in Niagara-on-the-Lake..” Because people come from all around the world to experience the haute cuisine and wine of Niagara, the story of this home is still being written. Designs are available to incorporate an opulent wine cellar in the large silo off the kitchen. The spacious open, gourmet kitchen is ideal for hosting cooking classes. This architectural gem is now ready to feature new characters for its next chapter.
