Laut Loud (((~~~))) Kadapat {S01E03}

LAUT LOUD is a series of online concerts about the cultural sailing vessel Arka Kinari. The crew of Arka Kinari collaborates with local musicians and film makers to document and archive underground, avant-garde and traditional sounds. In each island a local guest curator selects artists with unique relevance and sonic relationship to that place, digging deep and ranging far. Bali is the site for the first four episodes, and is curated by the DJ and scene-catalyst Aditya Surya Taruna. Kadapat has a strange tendency to pit contradictory forces against one another — not just tradition and modernity, digital and analog, but also cultural traditions that were never meant to intersect. One half of the group plays the jegog — a gamelan-like instrument from the Jembrana region of Bali, a place long associated with outcasts, bandits, and the marginalized. The other half of the group plays the gender — a gamelan often associated with the nobility of Karangasem, where the best genders are said to be lathered in gold. In Bali, an island of rigid customs, allowing these two instruments to meet is a notable decision. That they add glitchy electronic sounds to the mix only makes the concoction even more dramatic. For LAUT LOUD, the duo insisted on playing at the front deck — exposed to thr elements and the not so gentle lapping of waves. Perhaps carried by the ambiance or stricken by seasickness, they delivered an intense, uncompromising performance. ARKA KINARI is a floating cultural platform to sound the alarm on climate change and build networks of resilience in coastal communities. Traveling by sail and powered by renewable energy, it is both method and message. In ports Arka Kinari transforms into a stage for a bespoke audiovisual performance by the artists Filastine & Nova, as well as hosting workshops, talks, and concerts by local musicians. Arka Kinari has sailed over thirty thousand nautical miles, stopped in twenty-three nations, and is currently touring her home waters of the Indonesian archipelago.
