The Unlucky Country

To mark Remembrance Day 11.11.2012 we present this film made during the Vietnam War by the Commonwealth Film Unit in 1967. The film outlines the dual objectives of war. To not only win the battle but to also win the "hearts and minds" of the people. It considers developmental challenges in a population made up mainly of peasants, under the pressure of military build-up. It speaks of attempts to win the support of the people "by finding out what the Vietcong promised to do but didn't", and it looks at some of Australia's involvement in military and civic action, including health, education and infrastructure. Directed by Donald Murray the film can be seen as a companion piece to the 1966 Commonwealth Film Unit production Action in Vietnam.
