Painting A Blue Tamiya Grand Hauler Body

Here’s a video showing the process that I went through to lay down Tamiya TS-15 Blue paint on the Tamiya Grand Hauler body that I’ve been working on. I start by cleaning my spray booth to remove any dust then I wet it down to contain anything that may want to float around later. I mask all opentings in the body from inside and the underside to prevent any overspray from getting on the semi gloss black I put on the inside. I mounted the body on a tall can with some tape and put that on a lazy susan so I could easily rotate it and get to all sides. With the body in the booth I go over the entire surface with a clean paint brush to knock off any debris that may have made its way onto the body while getting it in place. I warm the can in a cup of hot water (a tick above warm) for about five min to increase can pressure and to allow the paint to flow better. I always like to spray three coats and the first is a light one to get the surface sticky. I wait for about ten min in between coats then apply a heavy coat. I finish up with a third coat (that’s also heavy) and let it dry. I do this with primer, main color, clear coat and so on. This body is getting a satin clear finish so I’ll give it a light sanding then the clear and move on to the details after a week of drying time. If this was going to be a gloss finish, I would apply another six coats of paint before sanding and polishing it. If you’re ever in the mid west Georgia area stop by and see the store. Hetmanski Hobbies THE STORE IS NOW CLOSED.
