It will also be easier to study, work or retire in Europe. This video is specific to an American applying for citizenship in the country of Slovenia. You must have at least one parent or grandparent born in what is now Slovenia to use this procedure. But if you have ancestors from anywhere Europe, I hope the information will help you get started on applying for your EU passport. Check the consular website of the country you're interested in to see if they have a similar application. I'm not gonna lie: it's complicated. Joining the Slovenian Union of America is a great way to meet the requirement for 5 years of active involvement with Slovenia-related organizations. Note that if you are just joining now, and have no other relevant activities, you will have to wait five years to apply. You will need to obtain official copies of birth, death and marriage certificates to document your direct line of connection to your Slovenia-born ancestors. You will be sending a lot of ID documents through the mail. I opened a UPS account for this purpose so I could track my shipments and provide secure, pre-addressed envelopes for the government agencies that requested them. Don't forget that every non-Slovenian document will need an apostille (including your passport). Documents must also be translated into the Slovenian language by an official court translator. Hiring a lawyer in Slovenia to submit your application is highly recommended. However, you should NOT contact a lawyer until you have your documents, meet the requirements and are ready to apply.
