The one million cubic foot ZPG-2 non-rigid, largest airship ever built for anti-submarine warfare, was at first managed on the ground in the same manpower-intensive manner of earlier, smaller ships – albeit with many more men. This training film, second-to-last made and toward the end of the US Navy’s LTA program, shows the evolved techniques used to substitute heavy “mule” tractors in landing, docking, undocking and takeoff operations. As explained by CDR Charles Mills in the book “LTA Transport & Carrier Systems" (www.airshiphistory.com) these giant airships were routinely handled by only seven men. Also seen in the video is the massive Type IV mooring mast, second-to-largest mobile mast ever built.
