After months of repair and maintenance work, tall ship Bessie Ellen was looking shipshape by early April, ready to set sail on her 120 Year Round Britain Tour. Then, skipper and owner Nikki Alford heard that the High Orchard Bridge, one of many along the Sharpness Canal that must lift to allow ships to pass through, was broken. Suddenly Nikki, the crew, and the team at Nielsen's Shipyard had just a few days to completely remove Bessie Ellen's masts and rigging, lay them on the deck to pass under the bridge, and replace it all again on the other side of the bridge. It took a mammoth effort from all involved to complete the task in record time and get Bessie ready for her departure on 19th April 2024.
