Understanding Eustachian Tube Catheterization | Effective Relief for ET Blockage

For patients with persistent Eustachian Tube blockage/ Dysfunction which fail medical management a procedure called Eustachian Tube Dilatation is performed. The Eustachian Tube is a hollow tube between the middle ear and the back of the nose - the tube is responsible for equalizing middle ear pressure. Certain criteria have to be met before a decison is taken to do this procedures. The indications are: Persistent ear blockage with air bone gap and an abnormal impedance tymapnometry report recurrence of perforation after a successfully performed myringoplasty Recurrence of middle ear retraction after repeated grommet insertions Procedure The procedure is generally performed in an Operation theatre wityh a stand by anaesthetist. A nasal endoscope is introduced and the Eustachian Tube opening is identified A catheter is introduced into the lateral cartilaginous part of the tube and the balloon is inflated for a short while. The results are usually fairly immediately noticeable- especially the feeling that the ear is now opened up. About The Doctor!
