Melbourne Harris Train Destination Roll

Here we see the entire list of destinations on a desto roll from a Melbourne 'Harris' suburban electric train. The roll is wound manually, and as shown by this video takes around 2 minutes 15 seconds to get from one end to the other. This desto is obviously no longer attached to an actual Harris car, and was on display at the 2020 Newport Workshops open days weekend. The blind is not quite loaded properly, and you will see it moves from side to side quite a bit. This sometimes happened in service anyway. The full list of destinations shown is as follows: SPECIAL CAULFIELD MOORABBIN CHELTENHAM CITY LOOP MORDIALLOC ASPENDALE CARRUM FRANKSTON STONY POINT CRIB POINT OAKLEIGH DANDENONG FLINDERS STREET SPENCER STREET NEWPORT NEWPORT WORKSHOPS WILLIAMSTOWN WILLIAMSTOWN PIER ALTONA SUNSHINE ST ALBANS KENSINGTON ESSENDON BROADMEADOWS BRIGHTON BEACH SANDRINGHAM EASTMALVERN EPPING GOWRIE GLEN WAVERLEY ALAMEIN CAMBERWELL BOX HILL MITCHAM RINGWOOD FERNTREE GULLY BELGRAVE CROYDON LILYDALE WARBUTON HEALESVILLE WARB-TON. H-VILLE COBURG FLINDERS STREET FAWKNER UPFIELD ST KILDA PORT MELBOURNE PRINCES BRIDGE RESERVOIR LALOR HEIDELBERG MACLEOD ELTHAM HURSTBRIDGE RACE SPECIAL SHOW SPECIAL Harris trains were in service until 1988, and this list largely shows where trains terminated at that time. There are several interesting things to note: -There are a couple of notable missing destinations, Werribee had gone electric in 1983 but is not included, and trains began terminating at Greensborough in 1979, also not on this blind. Pakenham is also not listed, which I believe had some suburban services at this time. -Ferntree Gully is included but not Upper Ferntree Gully. -Stony Point, Crib Point, Warbuton and Healesville are all on non-electrified lines, and were displayed when running a service that connected with a steam or diesel service to those final destinations. -The destination 'Warb-ton. H-ville' is a particularly interesting inclusion. This was the destination displayed on 'E trains,' which were sets of country cars hauled by a pair of wooden Swingdoor electric motors as far as Lilydale, where steam locomotives took over for the remaining journey beyond the wires to Warburton and Healesvile. E trains stopped running around the time the Harris trains entered service, and Harris motors were certainly never used on them. The destination may have been used when running to Lilydale and connecting with services to both Healesville and Warburton. -The destinations are broadly grouped by geographic location, meaning the driver should not have to scroll too far to find a nearby suburb. A notable exception on this list is 'City Loop,' which appears in amongst the Frankston line destinations. The 'Loop opened in the early 1980's, and it would have been added over the top of another destination which was no longer used. -Flinders Street appears twice, which makes sense as the most commonly used destination. Extra points for anyone who can guess what the object leaning against the right hand side of the desto box is! If you notice the audio is a bit unusual in this video, it's because the original audio could not be used and I've taken some audio from a different video taken on the same day. It's from the same location, but in the other video I was walking around, hence the changing soundscape.
