It is said that in 1189, during Minamoto no Yoritomo's invasion of Oshu, he received a prophecy in a dream and enshrined a Shinmei.[1] After that, there was no shrine guardian, but during the Keian era (1648-1652), Hori Tango no Kami Toshinao[note 1] (Hori Naoyoshi, lord of Echigo Muramatsu Domain?) rebuilt it.[1] During the Edo period, it was called Komagome Shinmei Shrine and was the main shrine of Komagome Village. It was completely destroyed in an air raid, but thanks to the enthusiasm of the various towns that belonged to the shrine, a new one was built in 1954 and remains to this day.[1] Locals used to call it "Oshinmei-sama." The main shrine mikoshi, made in 1922 (Taisho 11), is a large mikoshi (made by Takejiro Okura of Honjo) with a pedestal measuring 3'8" and also known as Senkan mikoshi. In 2000 (Heisei 12), it was restored with the enthusiasm of the shrine parishioners (Hon-Gyotoku, 16th Asako Shukei) and paraded through the shrine parish area for the first time in 44 years. Since then, a Shinko Festival has been held once every four years.
