What did Lutyen’s the British architect of New Delhi have in common with Hindu and Vedic worldview? An emphasis on measurement and order. Lutyen’s personal motto was the Latin “metiendo vivendum” (by measurement we live). That could be straight from the brahmanas or shastras! It is the left hemispheric way of attending to the world. The question is to serve what ends! For example in Lutyen’s case it was largely to project power and order of the British empire through the architecture of New Delhi. In the case of the vedas it was establishing correspondences and connections with the divine to achieve harmony with nature and prosperity, longevity for living creatures (people, plants and animals) from the Yajaman and his wife, to the attending priests, the guests and the wider community.
