The series is a young adult fantasy that follows the story of two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, as they navigate a world of magic, mystery, and danger. Caraval introduces us to the sisters as they escape from their abusive father and travel to the mystical island of Isla de los Sueños, where the magical game of Caraval is held once a year. Scarlett has always dreamed of attending Caraval, and when she and Tella finally arrive, they are swept up in a world of illusions and mystery. However, the game soon turns deadly, and Scarlett must solve a series of clues to save her sister from a dangerous fate. Legendary picks up where Caraval left off, with Tella as the main protagonist. In this installment, Tella is trying to uncover the identity of Legend, the mastermind behind Caraval. Her quest leads her to the Fates, powerful beings who control the destinies of mortals. Tella must navigate their dangerous world to uncover the truth about Legend and save her mother's life. Finale concludes the series, bringing both sisters together as they face their greatest challenge yet. They must confront the consequences of their past actions and make difficult choices about their future. The stakes are higher than ever before, and the sisters must rely on each other to survive. Overall, the Caraval series is a whimsical and captivating read. Garber's world-building is super imaginative, and her characters are well-developed - Jacks and Tella shipper. The series is full of twists and turns, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and guessing who's who and what's what. The magical game of Caraval is a fascinating concept, and Garber's execution of it is beautiful. The romance subplot in the series is also really well-done, adding depth and emotion to the story. I will say, for my reading experience, the series was not without its flaws. The pacing can be slow at times, especially in Finale, and some of the plot points feel as though they come out of nowhere. Additionally, I found some points unsatisfying as they didn't get their own full circle moment, but I can see how it adds to the whimsical fairytale-esc world she has developed. Overall, the Caraval series is an absolute must-read for fans of YA fantasy. Garber's imaginative world-building and GORGEOUS characters make for a captivating reading experience.
