Replacing Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 surrounds

A few years back the Wharfedale Diamond 9.5 floorstanders were quite a bargain. Although the list price was between $800 and $1000, they were widely available for approximately $300, the price I also paid. For the money they had outstanding sound, and still sound very good. Unfortunately some examples, mine included, suffered from premature perishing of the rubber surrounds of the midrange and bass units. After searching far and wide for suitable replacement surrounds, I found the perfect solution: The RSK-6.5 repair kit from Simply Speakers in the USA (www.SimplySpeakers.com). Because I needed four surrounds, I had to buy two kits for $34.95 each, thus a total of $69.90 plus shipping costs, if any. In this video I'll show you how I replaced my surrounds. The directions are largely based on those of Simply Speakers, with two major differences: Firstly the Wharfedale drivers seemingly have quite a stiff suspension, so that the cones/voice coils don't decentre easily. It was thus not necessary for me to fiddle with the centering of any of the four drivers. Secondly, you don't have to remove the inner lip of the old surrounds that is glued to the cone. It doesn't seem possible to remove it, and the inner lip of the new surround sticks nicely to it. Just be sure to trim away all the remains of the old surround from the edge of the cone. All in all, it is a very simple process, and the new surrounds fit perfectly. Just take care when working with the glue, as I also point out in the video. I made a bit of a mess with the first driver getting glue on parts that didn't need it, but luckily it doesn't affect the sound, only the looks. Lastly, replacing the surrounds of the 9.5's is really worth the trouble and money. Mine now sound superb again, and of course the new surrounds should last a long, long time.
