On my first day in Surabaya, I dove straight into the city's rich history, starting with the Impressive Russian Submarine Museum. This Cold War-era submarine, once patrolling Indonesian waters, is now on display by the river—and yes, you can actually step inside and experience how a small crew lived in such a confined space! From there, I wandered past the Alun-Alun Building, a beautiful Dutch colonial-style structure. It was buzzing with energy due to a university graduation party, so I couldn’t explore much inside, but I did find a tourist information center. Next up, I strolled through a park with a striking military statue before spotting the Governor of East Java’s residence—a huge Dutch colonial mansion, quite impressive! Finally, I grabbed a taxi to Tugu Pahlawan Park, home to the iconic Heroes Monument, which honors those who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. Sadly, the museum next to the monument was closed by the time I arrived, but the monument itself was stunning.
