Hamina not only has a beautiful and unique city center, it also has a wonderful seashore and harbor. Hamina Guest Marina is located on these shores. The harbor is just 1 km south of the city center. It's a great place for an afternoon drink and snack or for walkers like us who love to enjoy the stunning sea views. The port was established in the late 19th century. This was intended to compete with the nearby city of Kotka, which had weakened Hamina economically since the 1870s. However, Hamina lost its position as the leading city in the region to its burgeoning neighbour. In the summer of 2022 (July) a walrus nicknamed "Stena" came ashore in Hamina. It quickly became a news sensation across Finland. After a few days in Hamina, the walrus returned to the sea, but landed shortly afterwards in nearby Kotka. Turned out to be starving and attempts were made to rescue it, sadly it died a few days later. It is very unusual for a walrus to appear in the Baltic Sea, as these waters are not well suited to Arctic animals. A preserved specimen will be on display at the Central Natural History Museum in Helsinki. Later we also visit the gorgeous Oolanni Park. It is still a project under construction as the work will be carried out in phases. The estimated construction costs are approximately €700,000 - €1,000,000.
