A Review of the Smallrig 85cm Parabolic Softbox

These days parabolic softboxes are all the rage. It is hard to find a softbox that does not claim to be parabolic, in spite of the fact that the configuration of these softboxes misses the point of being parabolic in that the light source is not at the focus of the parabola, and that placing a diffuser at the front negates any shaping that may happen behind it. The great problem with these parabolic softboxes is that they are very deep, with the weight placed well forward. This makes it hard to lock the light in place to prevent it slumping, and also takes up a great deal of space, very important in a small studio. The Smallrig LA 85 has a parabolic shape, not that it matters, but it is shallow, around half the depth of a comparable 90cm parabolic softbox. It also comes with a grid, which does far more to shape the light than anything behind the diffuser. Please don't confuse a properly configured parabolic umbrella with a parabolic softbox.
