On Paper. 13.5" x 8.5" (inches) 200gsm paper This is the first in a series of works that I wanted to make using the monoprinting techniques taking just one single subject (portrait head) and trying various methods, working from sketches, using photographic reference, exploring colour, creating with stencils, using oil and acrylic paint, trying a combination of methods and as many variations that I can think of. All the works in this series will make use of recycled materials, using plastic to make paint transfer sheets and cardboard to create masks or templates. Method : Begin with a wash of acrylic paint and water (not filmed but features in this earlier video    • Monoprinting a portrait with black an...   ) Allow to dry completely. Use a thin plastic sheet (recycled plastic bag) and apply a thin coat of paint using the oil stick. Apply torn paper to those areas of the composition that need protecting from the paint. Begin to rough out your drawing by using a blunt pencil or apply pressure with your fingertips to add dark tones. This is an improvised work but it helps to have visual reference to get the correct proportions, use photos, sketches or a mirror. Take care not to apply too much paint and allow for the white highlights to be added.
