[ADVENTURE] Bikepacking the Valle Vidal - Northern New Mexico

New Mexico - the land of enchantment. Follow us on our 3 day trip through the scenic Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest. Starting in the canyons near Cimarron we rode FR-1950 through lush fields and towering walls. The descent down into the meadows near Ring Place brought us into an area with a rich history and views that could inspire paintings. Riding up the mountain pass we tested our physical ability and got rewarded with beautiful views and a place to camp close to the approach. After a grueling ascent, we reached the peak of the journey at 12,584 ft. A quick descent both on foot and on bike leads us to the Rio Costilla area and the start of our vacation. The good: Beautiful views, not a lot of people, safe riding, perfect weather on our summit day, and all around a good trip The bad: Monsoon season made it rain 2/3 days, we even got hailed on! This trip would have been easier if we were conditioned and acclimated a little better. The future: If I were to run this route again I would incorporate the descent into a day by itself or even try to make it a loop. We had no problems parking on the side of the road but I doubt it's encouraged, especially in the private property section of FR-1950/Cerrososo road.
