This very short video was recorded by me on 2 August 2023 at Treblinka, one of the six "extermination" camps in the vast Nazi camp system. (There were, of course, many other camps where Jews, Poles, the Roma, and others were killed, but those were not "extermination" camps as such, a distinction that I cannot elaborate upon here.) August 2 also marks the date of the Treblinka uprising in 1943, which eventually led the Nazis to shutter the camp. One of those deported to, and killed, in Treblinka was the pediatrician and writer of children's literature, Janusz Korczak, who accompanied dozens of children under his charge at his orphanage in the Warsaw Ghetto deported to Treblinka. As I wrote recently in an essay found at vinaylal.wordpress.com, one of the most curious facts is that under his direction, the children performed Tagore's play, The Post Office, literally on the eve of their deportation to Treblinka. Treblinka swallowed up Korczak and the children, as it did the lives of at least 800,000 people--a number exceeded only by the 1.1 million or so killed in Auschwitz.
