I was curious to see if vivid colors 45° apart on OKLCH matched the 8 colors at 45° around the Ostwald color circle. what do I mean by 45° apart? If colors are in a circle, a convenient way to describe hue is by angle. a cool red and a middle yellow, for example, are about 90° apart on a circle where hue differences are measured perceptually. complementary colors are 180° apart. Ostwald’s Color circle, developed over 100 years ago, spaced hues based on perception - not based on the old painter's theory of red-yellow-blue. First I had to find real life examples of those colors - so I measured a bunch of paint chips from the hardware store. I found Valspar colors very close to the targets. then I had to find spot-printed examples of Ostwald hue circles - which took some digging! I got a hold of two books from the 1930s, Tonks' "Colour Practice in the Schools" and Judson's "Handbook of Colour." let's see if my modern colors match up with the colors in these old books! #colortheory #colorscience #colorwheel #artandscience
