Feel free to ask questions, share your knowledge, and support each other. The Dell PowerEdge R420 supports both hard drives and solid-state drives, compatible with SATA and SAS interfaces. However, it does not support NVMe drives due to its status as a 12th generation server. The drive capacities vary depending on the chassis size: an 8-bay Small Form Factor (SFF) chassis or a 4-bay Large Form Factor (LFF) chassis. According to Dell's specifications, the SFF chassis can accommodate up to 1TB for SATA HDDs, 2.4TB for SAS HDDs, 200GB for SATA SSDs, and 400GB for SAS SSDs. However, these specifications are outdated. Our tests have shown that the SFF chassis can support up to 2TB for SATA HDDs and 7.68TB for both SATA and SAS SSDs, while the 2.4TB limit for SAS HDDs remains accurate. For the LFF chassis, Dell's outdated specs indicate a maximum of 2TB for SATA HDDs and 3TB for SAS HDDs. Our testing revealed that the LFF chassis can handle up to 22TB for SATA HDDs and 20TB for SAS HDDs. If you have successfully installed larger drives, please share your experience in the comments to help the community. In terms of performance, the maximum speed for SATA HDDs is 7.2K RPM. SAS HDDs can achieve speeds of 7.2K, 10K, or even 15K RPM, offering significantly faster performance. Keep in mind that the R420 is an older server, and drives, particularly those with ball bearings, may wear out over time. If you are using older drives (3-5 years old), consider having a spare or be ready to replace them with SSDs.
