Embsay Crag, Flasby Fell, Rylstone Fell, Barden Moor, mountain biking

A loop ride just north of Skipton with a deviation past Bolton Abbey. It’s a well known route and documented in a guidebook (see below). We started from a layby at Halton Moor. The views over Middle Hare Head were stunning, with mist in the valleys below as we dropped down through Westy Bank Wood to Bolton Abbey. After a stretch of tarmac to warm up, the climb began up to Embsay Crag. An interesting climb with panoramic views from the top. After a brief rest we headed down but stopped on the steepest section to look it over. After deliberating, we decided to play safe and walk the short section. Then it was tarmac until the stony track heralded the start of the gentle climb onto Flasby fell. Gentle in terms of gradient, but energy sapping in terms of boggy stop start terrain. A welcome lunch break was behind a stone wall in a wind shadow. The descent started fine and wasn’t steep but had some awkward bits and a few stop starts. The route then went through the hamlet of Flasby and was supposed to follow a minor road to Hetton. But the road was closed; normally a pedestrian or bike can get through, but the nasty looking cameras persuaded us to find an alternative route to Hetton. After a short break the next section was a short stretch of tarmac which led into the bridleway which in turn would lead onto Rylstone Fell. Wild open country that began with a short section of lumpy boggy bits but soon turned into a wide open track across the wild moorland. Heading back towards our starting point with superb views across the fading heather was a blast. Great company with other riders from Let’s Ride (British Cycling) Guidebook: Mountain Biking in the Yorkshire Dales, Ian Boydon, Cicerone
