UP 4014 "Big Boy" at Ashton & Rochelle Global III (Flagg), IL 9/6/2024

Snuck out of work a bit early on Friday to make it down to northern Illinois, where the Union Pacific 4014 "Big Boy" steam locomotive was scheduled to depart Sterling at 1:45 PM to finish its run to the Global III intermodal terminal at Rochelle for weekend events as part of its 2024 "Heartland of America" tour. After reaching Rochelle, I decided to head a little bit west on Highway 38 and chose to set up at the small town of Ashton. Didn't have to wait too long, only a little over 20 minutes before the 4-8-8-4 behemoth stormed through. I gave chase, and fortunately the train slowed for the entrance to Global III, giving me time to set up on the Thorpe Road overpass just past the tiny unincorporated community of Flagg. Unfortunately, my footage here suffered audio issues as my Rode shotgun mic decided to act up, not helped by the sudden, gusty rain shower that moved in as the train approached. At least I was able to get it corrected in time to capture the last few whistle blasts as the train eased into the intermodal yard for display over the weekend.
