The Galopera is a folk dance from Paraguay where a woman may balance a pitcher or a jug on their head while they dance. Paraguay is a bilingual country, unique in the world where a native language, the Guaraní, is recognized as an official national language together with Spanish. This cultural blend is seen in Paraguay's forms of arts, crafts, music, festivals, literature, cinema, fashion and languages. Paraguayan culture and traditions were highly influenced by the presence of Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries, which left magnificent architectural constructions and sculptures that created the Spanish-Guarani baroque culture. In the Paraguayan people, indigenous and Spanish influences converge equally, which makes Paraguay a country of peculiar customs such as the love of yerba mate and the deep knowledge of natural medicine. The Paraguayan Polka was created in the 19th century, such as Campamento Cerro León, Alfonso Loma, Mamá Cumanda, Che Lucero Aguai'y, Ndarekoi La Culpa and Carreta Guy. The Paraguayan Polka is much different than the traditional polka. It’s danced in pairs by linking arms; the pairs can unlock momentarily during the dance and make figures. The Paraguayan polka is danced in ballrooms and on the village dance floors, or under the shades of the houses, in the country; more there than in the cities. There was an era in which it was considered taboo to dance the polka in the ballrooms, just like the Guaranies from the city. But the feeling of the village people was stronger, the immense spiritual force of the music and of the dances, conquered the snobbism of some. There are several ways of dancing the Paraguayan polka. The variations are in the form or style in the choreography or figures in which it is used in the dance. The country folk prefer the polka rather than the Guarania because they like fast paced music. There are different variations and versions of this dance. Polca Syryry is an older version where the arms and legs are straight and unbending. Polca popo, which is a jumpy, more joyful version. There is also the polca jekutu o clavada (coreographed to mark every move exactly) and the Polca valseada (more like the traditional waltz). The Paragayan polka is danced in ballrooms and village dance floors.
