Instinct Training

Hey everyone here is a speed training method that I have developed. Make sure you listen with the audio on as this gives the explanation for the method. I Hope this helps anyone who’s interested. Here’s the transcript of the video just in case: "Hello everyone my name is Benati Louvouezo, but a lot of you probably know me as penguin or the guy who wears yellow shirts. Today I want to share one of the methods I developed for speed training that has helped me to be competitive and enhance my performance greatly over the course of this season. Speed courses can vary greatly depending on the competition circuit and the the layout of a given space, however one thing tends to remain consistent among speed courses and that’s their randomness. While it’s true that there are skills that tend to appear more than others in speed courses and there are skills that tend to be more viable than others, the order in which these skills are used tends to be very unpredictable. The method I have developed is not meant to work as a replacement for learning these skills but rather as a method of connecting these skills more effectively in any environment. The method begins with a starting point, this can be a box, a dot, a bar, it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s a clearly defined point. Then 6 other points will be placed around a given space, this can be in a gym or a park if you want. Then each one of these points will be assigned a number; 1-6. Now here’s the important part, each one these points will be put through a randomizer shuffling the order. Now, starting at your static point each one the points must be touched in the exact order displayed on the randomizer. What this will do is require the athlete to constantly adapt to their given surroundings, putting themselves into situations that they otherwise wouldn’t have expected or experienced if they planned their route before hand, targeting the athletes adaptability and requiring them to make moment by moment decisions. On each rep the order is shuffled, always forcing the athlete out of their comfort zone and requiring new methods on each run. I generally do 3 sets of 4 with a couple minutes of rest between sets. The logic behind this method is that by practicing a constantly changing speed course, the athletes ability to adapt and approach unpredictable speed courses will improve, not only allowing them to apply skills in odd or difficult areas of a course but also recover better when plans fall through and on demand adaptation is required. Points may also be added or modified into gates depending on the type of training an athlete is going for. Heights may also be modified along with the spacing between points requiring less or more endurance for each run. This is by no means the only method of training that I use for my speed practice, and I don’t intend for it to be interpreted as the end all be all of speed training methods. But I do believe that it provides a great deal of value and has been a large factor of why I have been able to meet my goals so far this season. I Hope this helps anyone who’s interested. Although I have only tested the methods effectiveness in speed I believe it could also yield benefits for skill and style athletes allowing for better awareness and potentially safer bails when practiced over a long period of time. I call it, instinct training.”
