A gourmand fragrance is one that entices with hints of gustatory (usually sweet) delights, in a cheeky, almost sexual, sensory provocation. By this notion, Shalimar is definitely gourmand, with its vanilla sweetness obscuring a harsh leather. But the queen of all gourmands has to be 1992s Angel, however, amidst chocolate and cotton candy, juicy fruits and spun sugar, the tiny bright blue star managed to retain an aura of distinct identity as a fragrance, and not something one spreads on toast. Alas, the gourmand market (and current tastes) have evolved towards blurring the line between fragrance and food aromas, some people's sweet tooth making a demand for increasingly edible smelling perfumes. I say all this because Guerlain's latest launch, the confusingly named Habit Rouge Parfum, is the type of gourmand fragrance I dislike the most. While being far removed from Habit Rouge Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, L'Eau, Sport, Rouge Privé (to cite a few of the nice flankers), Parfum 2024 is little more than raisin rum pastry with some echoes of 2015s Dress Code. As delicious as it may sound, I certainly do not want to smell like that.
