And, due to its history, Lake Nyos is no exception. This short disaster documentary takes a look the Lake Nyos disaster which was a rare natural disaster, centered at Lake Nyos in Cameroon. It killed many people in the span of a few short hours. From an outsider's perspective, it would have appeared that nothing happened if not for the scores of dead people and animals. What kind of disaster could have struck so swiftly with no one noticing? The Lake Nyos Disaster was caused by a rare phenomenon known as a limnic eruption or lake overturn which causes carbon dioxide trapped beneath the water to erupt into the air above it. Often, the gases beneath the lake are supplied by volcanic activity underground. This happens to be the case in Lake Nyos as it happens to be situated on top of the Cameroon Volcanic Line. The erupted gases then settle onto land with devastating effects. ********** #naturaldisasters #history #horrorstories #horror #lakenyosdisaster #rarehistory Image Sources: Degassing Pumps: Pashute, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., via Wikimedia Commons African Reflief Map: Eric Gaba, Wikimedia Commons user Sting, CC BY-SA, 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., via Wikimedia Commons Gulf of Guinea (Cameroon Volcanic Line): Amcaja, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/..., via Wikimedia Commons
