I hike to Fitzsimmons Creek in Kananaskis, Alberta, a place I've visited many times before. The winter solstice occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happened on December 21, 2023 at 8:27 pm where I live in Alberta. This is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, and when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum elevation in the sky. I hiked to one of my favorite winter destinations for a evening alone, contemplating the stars and the universe. On this day I had less than 9 hours of daylight, so I didn't have time to hike very far.
