Jacksnax: Vintage Gibson ES-3XX Comparison. 1958-1967

Hey! This is what happens when you’re friends with guitar nerds. Myself and a bunch of my friends own a smattering of great ES-3XX style guitars from the 50’s and 60’s. Over lunch one day I asked if I could borrow my friends 1961 335. The next day I spoke with an old bandmate who mentioned my channel and has a 345…I told him I had the ‘61 in the house for a vid. He offered his too! I own two 335s from ‘66. Then it dawned on me…another friend has a pair of ES 3XX guitars from 1958, a 335 and the first 355 ever to roll off the line in Kalamazoo. Too tempting! Once he was on board I knew I had to get to work. Super fun…this episode was shot using my Kemper, but not in my studio. The 1958 guitars don’t leave their home, so I had to bring my rig and the rest of the Gibson family to my friends house (hence the wrinkled sheet backdrop😉). I tried to play the same or similar ideas so we can compare and contrast. The settings on the amp are identical and the camera/mic stayed pretty consistent throughout. My take? I love my guitars…but I also realized there really is a huge difference with the PAFs. It’s like singing into a better microphone. Side by side and in particular if you’re the one playing, the experience was quite telling. The chrome vs. nickel, Indian vs. Brazilian, wide vs. narrow debate is more one of cosmetic preference and playing comfort in my opinion with little tonal ramifications attributable to those changes. But the pickups?…there’s something substantially different. I’d like a 345 for those varitone sounds…but they’re too expensive for me to experiment with one at this time, but that cutting tone is pretty special…perhaps I can find one with a few stories for reasonable dough. Great stuff🤘 I hope you dig the video. J
