Umea & Stockholm, Sweden

Tuesday, August 15 - Friday, August 18, 2023, Umeå. Still recovering from my injury on the Kungsleden, we spent three nights at "First Hotel Dragonen" near the centre of Umeå. This very nice hotel cost only 2,914 SEK ($88 per night) including unlimited cappuccinos, a very good buffet breakfast, and even a modest evening meal. We were very impressed with Umeå. It's a beautiful, vibrant small city built on both sides of the river Umeälven. That sounds as though it's out of "Lord of the Rings", no? There's a university, lots of outdoor art, and green space. It's very clean, modern and cheerful. We spent both full days walking around, about 8 miles each day, and visited the museum associated with the university. While in the museum, we learned that Sweden had raised its terrorist threat level to the second highest step, reflecting the sad fact that Sweden is now considered a priority target of Muslim terrorists due to burning of the Qur'an. Sweden is exceptionally liberal. Taking advantage of Sweden's freedom of speech a Danish guy burned a copy of the Qur'an on Swedish soil. As a consequence, there's now a fatwa against all of Sweden. Friday, August 18 - Tuesday, August 22, 2023, Stockholm We flew SAS, using United Airlines miles, from Umeå back to Stockholm and again took the locals' way back to the city centre, Centralen. This was the 583 bus from the airport to Märsta then the 40 train to Centralen for a total cost of only 26 SEK each. We stayed four nights at the Scandic hotel, Clara. This hotel also had an excellent breakfast buffet with unlimited cappuccinos. During our stay we walked around the city, striking out in different directions each day and making the walks into loops of between 8 and 10 miles. Stockholm has lots of green space, lots of seaside, and lots of open-air art so these walks were all very enjoyable. Stockholm is fabulous. We liked it more than Paris, London, Vienna, Barcelona, etc. We never did avail ourselves of the excellent public transport system that uses busses, metro, streetcars, and ferries. It only costs 26 SEK each for a single journey ticket (if you're over 65) and the tickets permit transfers within 75 minutes from the start of the journey. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't unload all our Swedish cash. We still have over 1,500 SEK. Had we completed the Kungsleden, using up the cash wouldn't have been a problem; some places will only take cash. In the cities, on the other hand, only grocery stores and Systembolagets accept cash. I wondered whether I could use an ATM to deposit cash back to our USA bank account but that doesn't work. You can only withdraw money. We figure it's not a problem for us though. We'll just have to return to Sweden. Trying to make our way back to Arlanda airport we got lost in Stockholm's central station. It's cavernous and confusing. There are the same-numbered platforms in different parts of the station. In particular, there are two number 2 platforms, one for the Arlanda Express and another for the 41 commuter train that we wanted to catch on our way to Arlanda. We had to ask for help but once we'd located the correct platform everything went smoothly. --- Copyright strike!
