Five years ago today, one of France's most infamous and deadly terrorist attacks took place. French Prime Minister Jean Castex laid wreaths at the sites where the November 2015 attacks took place, as the country marked the fifth anniversary of the killings that shook the country and the world. Castex attended a ceremony outside the Stade de France in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis, before laying wreaths outside the Bataclan concert hall and near six cafes where gunmen went on a deadly rampage on Nov. 13, 2015. In another ceremony in Paris, Muslim leaders paid tribute to the victims of the attacks. In all, 130 people were killed when groups of gunmen and suicide bombers attacked the perimeter of the Stade de France sports stadium, the Bataclan music hall, and a string of six bars and cafes: La Belle Equipe, Le Petit Cambodge, Le Carillon, A la Bonne Biere, Casa Nostra and Le Comptoir Voltaire. Responsibility for the killings was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS), which had called on its followers to attack France due to its involvement in the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. On the night of the attacks, then-French President Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency across France which lasted two years. The ceremonies come as France faced further terrorist incidents in recent weeks — one at a Paris suburb where a teacher was killed outside a school in broad daylight, and another that involved a knifeman killing three inside a church in Nice. These incidents also took place in the shadow of the recent attack in Vienna, during which a gunman killed four people. The French government has raised the nationwide security threat level to a maximum in the aftermath of the recent France attacks, and President Emmanuel Macron has called for a reform of the Schengen Zone.
