The jurisdiction was originally Panyu District, formerly known as Guangzhou Nansha Economic and Technological Development Zone established on May 12, 1993. In May 2005, it was upgraded to Nansha District under the jurisdiction of Guangzhou Municipality. On September 6, 2012, it became the sixth national-level new district established by the People's Republic of China and the first national-level new district under the jurisdiction of a prefecture-level city. The China (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone was established in April 2015. The Nansha Free Trade Zone covers an area of 60 square kilometers, the largest in Guangdong Province, and is divided into 7 zones, including finance, shipping and other fields. The People's Government is located at No. 1 Fenghuang Avenue. Nansha District is located at the Pearl River Estuary and the geographical center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It is the only access to the sea in Guangzhou and an important hub connecting the urban agglomerations on both sides of the Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong and Macao. It has the only deep-water terminal in the western part of the Pearl River Delta. Nansha Port and CSSC Longxue Shipbuilding Base, one of the three major shipbuilding bases in China. Nansha District of Guangzhou City is located in the southernmost part of Guangzhou City. It is the "only coastal district" of Guangzhou City and the only district bordering Guangzhou City, Shenzhen City (Bao'an District) and Zhongshan City. The west bank of the Humen Waterway at the Pearl River Estuary. It borders Panyu District to the north. Most of the area is reclaimed alluvial flat land (tidal flat) at the Pearl River Estuary.
