In 1947 Meng Foon of Chinese descent came to New Zealand as a young child and developed a passion for Te Reo Maori when he was just 7 years old. When he told his mother he wanted to study Maori at high school she told him it was a waste of breath. But learning the language has given him a breath of life. It’s bought him acceptance on the marae and Hui Maori throughout the country. This is the remarkable story of Chinese immigrant Meng Foon and how Te Ao Maori has played a major role in his life especially during his time as the Mayor of Gisborne, a role he held for 18 years.
