These tunnels will be built using tunnel boring machines at a maximum depth of 23 meters at reduced surface level. The route between Thane and Borivali always faces heavy traffic congestion. Once this road tunnel project is ready it will resolve the traffic woes of commuters and significantly reduce the travel time between Thane and Borivali. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the monitoring agency for this twin tube road tunnel project. While executing this project, certain precautionary measures will be taken to ensure that no harm is caused to the flora and fauna at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) through which the tunnel will pass. For this, tunnel boring machines will be used. Throughout the tunnel, there will be cross tunnels at every 300 metres, and the design will be done in such a manner that it enables vehicles to run at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour. A drainage system, smoke detector, and jet fans will be some other facilities of this project.
