Stay (2023)- Brazilian National Symphony

The title of this piece is meant in the imperative: as a request, a command, a prayer, a plea. This usage of the word Stay holds tension. It expresses a desire for togetherness, but also suggests an impending separation, and embodies the conflict between these two forces. The music traces this conflict through three possible understandings of the word, each carrying its own distinct meaning: Refrain, Restrain, Remain. It is an invitation to reflect on what it means to ask or be asked to stay, holding space for the contradictions and tension, but also affirming the choice to be vulnerable— to ask “please, stay,” and to answer “I will.” Performed by the Brazilian National Symphony at the 2024 Brasília Orchestral Summit, conducted by Maestro Claudio Cohen.
