Battle of Bir Hakeim - part 1 - the bunker - Lego display

Hi, In this video I show you part 1 of my Battle of Bir Hakeim Moc. I hope you will enjoy ! 😊 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Historical description : 1. The battlefield: Bir Hakeim or Bir Hacheim (in Italian) is a small watering hole in the northern Libyan desert. During the Second World War, Bir Hakeim served as an outpost, located at the southernmost point of the Allied defence lines. This defensive position of about 16km², surrounded by the ruins of an old Turkish fort, was entrusted to the 1st Free French Brigade (a unit later called the 1st Free French Division [DFL]). 2. The Battle: Bir Hakeim was a key battle in the North African campaign, and more precisely, in the Desert War (a campaign that took place from June 1940 to February 1943 in Libya and Egypt). Often forgotten, this battle constitutes the first vast military contribution of the fighters of Free France to the global conflict. It remains to be mentioned that the battle of Bir Hakeim contributed to changing the course of the war in favour of the Allies, in North Africa at least. The battle pitted the Free French Forces led by Brigadier General Marie-Pierre Koenig against German and Italian units commanded by German General Erwin Rommel. More concretely, the 1st Free French Brigade fought against Italian armoured divisions and German armoured divisions (the so-called Afrikakorps). The latter formed a quite homogeneous unit, which is not the case for the Free French forces. This military force, composed of French sailors, members of the Foreign Legion (incorporating many refugees from Eastern Europe) and soldiers from the French colonies (Senegal, Madagascar and the countries of what is now called Central Africa in the first place), constituted a real amalgam. In terms of numbers, about 3,700 Free Frenchmen were facing more than 30,000 Axis soldiers (in this case, Germans and Italians). Opposed to such a superiority of enemies, what was to happen? To be continued … 😉 Part 2 coming soon ! 😊 Sources: - Alexandre SUMPF, « Bir Hakeim », Histoire par l'image [online], URL : http://histoire-image.org/de/etudes/b...
