The city of Portsmouth and the town of Gosport in the county of Hampshire are separated by Portsmouth Harbour. This narrow stretch of water takes just under five minutes to cross by ferry. Due to the unique layout of the landscape, this is Gosport's main mode of public transport as the town has been without a railway station since 1953 (barring a freight service which closed in 1969). Since the 17th century or possibly earlier, a ferry service has existed between Portsmouth and Gosport in one form or another. In 1875 Gosport & Portsmouth Watermen’s Steam Launch Company was established. After various mergers, this became the Portsmouth Harbour Ferry Company in 1883. This operates today under the name Gosport Ferry Ltd. During operating hours, ferry crossings occur every 15 minutes. This video demonstrates a crossing in real time.
